Mika Hakkinen took pole position in his McLaren-Mercedes, just a fraction ahead of Michael Schumacher's Ferrari, in a very exciting qualifying session. David Coulthard was third for McLaren with Eddie Irvine fourth in his Ferrari. Then came Rubens Barrichello in his Stewart and Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the Jordan-Mugen Honda. At the start the two Ferraris got away best and so Schumacher led Hakkinen and Irvine led Coulthard. There was no stopping Schumacher after that and Irvine was able to get ahead of Hakkinen during the pits stops thanks to an error when the Finnish driver slid up the escape road at Mirabeau after hitting a patch of oil. Although Hakkinen tried to catch Irvine there was something wrong with the front end of the McLaren which affected the handling. Coulthard retired with mechanical trouble. The minor placings went to Frentzen in the Jordan and Giancarlo Fisichella and Alexander Wurz (the pair having a rare good day with the troublesome Benetton B199).
