JARNO TRULLI is among 240 Italian-based sportsmen and women who have signed a petition calling on the United States and its allies to stop military action in Afghanistan. Among those who have signed are soccer players Ronaldo and Gabriel Batistuta.

The statement, published in the Italian newspapers on Wednesday, said that the desire for peace is not through any "lack of respect for the memory of those who died in the attacks" on September 11 in New York and Washington.

The petition called for negotiations.
