AUSTRALIA's James Courtney is to lead the British Formula 3 Championship-winning Carlin Motorsport team in 2002. He will also be the Jaguar Racing test driver next year.

The 21-year-old Sydneysider, finished fourth this year driving for the Jaguar Formula 3 operation.

"When he tested the Jaguar R2 car this year, James showed himself to be comfortable with the physical demands of an F1 car," said team boss Niki Lauda. "He was able to adjust his driving style to suit the qualities of a car with approximately 600bhp more than his regular F3 car."

Courtney himself was delighted.

"The Jaguar test drive and the dream-ride in F3 for 2002 gives me the perfect season to look forward to," he said.
