Michael Schumacher has been penalized for passing Fernando Alonso on the last corner of the race when the Safety Car was diving into the pits, and has dropped out of the points to 12th place.

This year the rules have changed, and allow drivers to overtake from the line the Safety Car enters the pits onwards, but the changed rule does not apply to the last lap of the race. Schumacher was given a retrospective drive-through penalty, so 20 seconds were added to his final result, dropping him from 6th place to 12th.

The FIA stewards, which included former world champion Damon Hill, said the German breached Article 40.13 of the Sporting Regulations, which states ºif the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pit lane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking."

As a result Sebastien Buemi scored a point for finishing in 10th place.
