Italian Enrico Toccacelo won his first Formula 3000 victory of the year at the Nurburgring and now leads the FIA International Championship, despite the fact that Tonio Liuzzi has won three of the four races this year. The points system is such that Toccacelo's three second places give him an advantage over Liuzzi, who failed to score in Germany because he was hit by Tomas Enge on the first lap of the race and had to pit to replace a broken wheel. Liuzzi stormed back to 11th place despite the damage to his car.

Toccacelo's victory was the first in the series for Enrique Scalabroni's BCN team and the team's second driver Esteban Guerrieri was fourth behind Luizzi's team mate Robert Doornbos and France's Yannick Shroeder, who races for Durango.

Over in Brno in the Czech Republic Red Bull Junior Team's Scott Speed won both Formula Renault events and now leads the Eurocup and German championships.
