FRENCHMAN Sebastien Bourdais led from start to finish to win the International Formula 3000 Championship race at Imola. Bourdais, driving for the Super Nova team, was just able to hold off an attack by Rodrigo Sperafico (the winner of the opening race in Brazil) and is now second behind Sperafico in the title race. Third place went to local hero Giorgio Pantano driving for the Coloni Team.

Championship favorite Tomas Enge has a troubled time in qualifying in his Arden entry and ended up sixth behind Antonio Pizzonia (Petrobras Junior Team) and Patrick Friesacher (Red Bull Junior Team).

Pantano set the fastest lap of the race.
