Recently retired F1 star Jean Alesi has been testing the waters outside the premier division recently to determine what will be the next step in his career.

The Frenchman has been talking with Ferrari about a role with Maserati, which is expected to return to international competition in the next few years. Alesi has had close ties with Ferrari, which owns Maserati, throughout his career. He spent five years behind the wheel for the Italian outfit, highlighted by his only F1 win in 1995.

It was also announced Thursday that Alesi will test for the AMG Mercedes DTM team next week at Hockenheim.

Alesi told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, "It is clear I will not stay retired, my goal is to race. I would like to thank Norbert Haug who gave me this opportunity. Let's see if I like it".

Mercedes is playing down the significance of the test. Spokesman Wolfgang Schattling told reporters, "We just want to give him an opportunity to get the feeling of the car and see how he goes".
