New Sao Paulo mayor Joao Doria has confirmed reports F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone could rescue the Brazilian grand prix.

New Sao Paulo mayor Joao Doria has confirmed reports F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone could rescue the Brazilian grand prix.

With the Interlagos race already under a cloud for 2017, Ecclestone hinted last week that with new mayor Doria looking to privatise the track, he might be the buyer.

Doria has now told EFE news agency: "We will have a meeting with the organisers of formula one in Brazil next week. They obviously know our position.

"I invite Bernie Ecclestone and all those who are international formula one promoters to form a consortium and participate in the privatisation programme at Interlagos," the Sao Paulo mayor added.

When asked what his vision is for Interlagos, Doria answered: "It will be the same as that in Abu Dhabi, one of the most modern race tracks in the world."
