Tonio Liuzzi took pole position for the A1GP race in Portugal, despite it being his first outing in the series. He beat Indycar driver Robert Doornbos, although the Dutchman took pole for the second A1GP race. The two men, who were team-mates in Formula 3000 back in 2004 (Liuzzi won the title), were well clear of the highly-rated Irishman Adam Carroll. Liuzzi is hoping to use the event to remind the F1 circus of his talent. He has shown this year that he is a match for the former F1 stars competing in the Speed Car Series. It is the first time that A1 Team Italy has had a pole position. The field includes some highly-rated names including Filipe Albuquerque, Germany's Andre Lotterer, former F1 driver Narain Karthikeyan, American Marco Andretti and Switzerland's Neel Jani.
