Day 1 was dominated by Nextel Cup champion Jimmie Johnson in his Hendrick Motorsport Chevrolet, ahead of his team-mate Casey Mears, while Kyle Busch gave Toyota a reason to cheer in his first runs with a Joe Gibbs Racing Camry. Also up there was Red Bull's AJ Allmendinger. Johnson was fastest again in the morning of Day 2 with Villeneuve right behind him while Travis Kvapil, in a Yates Ford was third fastest ahead of Mears, Allmendinger and JJ Yeley in his Hall of Fame Racing Toyota. It was Yeley who went fastest of all in the afternoon session, lapping Daytona at 187.359mph to edge out Kurt Busch's Penske Dodge and his brother Kyle's Toyota. Another F1 refugee Juan Pablo Montoya was 15th quickest.
