Hamilton wary of Lotus threat

Not satisfied with the car upgrade that saw team mate Jenson Button show impressive pace in Hockenheim and allowed Hamilton himself to win in Hungary, the 2008 world champion says that McLaren needs another good upgrade for the next race at Spa if it is to push Fernando Alonso for the world championship.

While McLaren has clearly made large strides since its earlier loss of form, Hamilton believes that both Alonso's championship lead and the Lotus pace are strong warnings that more is needed.

"Hungary was a bit of a setback for Fernando (who finished fifth), but not a big enough blow," Hamilton said. "We were quick but if both Lotuses had qualified on the front row, they would have won.

"We did a great job throughout the oit stops but we've got a lot of work to do and we've got to improve the car because it's not quick enough. Hungary was on a knife-edge to stay ahead.

"It would be nice to have a comfortable race where we stay ahead and me and Jenson can get a one-two. But that's only going to come from more performance in the car and that's what we've got to work towards."

There is a limit to what McLaren can do, however, with F1 into its compulsory two week summer shutdown.

"I really hope we have another upgarde in Spa," Hamilton added, however. "I'm going to be pushing for it because Lotus, I believe, are coming with an upgrade then. I've no doubt that Lotus will win at some stage, if not in Spa, so we have to make sure that we make a step as well as they do."
