Ferrari begins Schumacher Monza tribute with special suits

Ferrari has revealed Michael Schumacher-inspired race suits for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.

Ferrari has begun revealing its plans for Monza with special race suits marking 30 years since Michael Schumacher's first Italian Grand Prix victory for the team.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will wear the designs during the Italian weekend. They form part of a wider tribute to Schumacher's breakthrough Monza win in 1996, his first season as a Ferrari driver.

Schumacher started third in the Ferrari F310 and won ahead of Jean Alesi and Mika Hakkinen, giving Ferrari its first home victory since Gerhard Berger in 1988. It was Schumacher's third win for the team and one of the early signs that Ferrari's long rebuilding project might eventually work.

The race suits carry seven stars, a reference to Schumacher's seven World Championships, along with details inspired by Ferrari's 1996 appearance.

Ferrari has so far shown the clothing rather than the complete car design, allowing Maranello to extend the unveiling - and the associated attention - over several days.

Hamilton's participation gives the exercise an obvious symmetry, as Ferrari's current seven-time World Champion honours the driver whose title record he matched.

Special clothing and liveries do not make the car faster, but at Monza that has never been the only consideration. Ferrari's home race is as much theatre as motor race, and Maranello knows how to dress for the occasion.
