Ian Raby

Raby began racing in the mid 1950s in 500cc Formula 3 racing. He was a garage owner from Brighton and built his own chassis to begin with but became more successful when he began to use Cooper machinery in 1956. He then switched to sportscar racing with Cooper and Elva machinery, and even shared a Cooper with Jack Brabham in the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hours. He returned to single-seaters in occasional Formula Libre outings in 1959 and then joined the Formula Junior circus before buying the ex-Keith Greene Gilby-BRM and competing in F1 races in 1963. He scored few results and in 1964 ran a Brabham-BRM instead. When F1 changed to 3-liter regulations in 1966, Raby turned to Formula 2 racing, again with a Brabham chassis. The 1966 season ended with a big crash at Brands Hatch but in 1967 he undertook a full F2 season with a Lotus-engined Brabham but at the end of July he crashed badly at Zandvoort. He died from his injuries at the start of November.
