BMW-Williams confirmed on Thursday that Juan Pablo Montoya will replace Benetton-bound Jenson Button next season.

Colombian Montoya, 25, will partner Ralf Schumacher in the 2001 season after being released from the final year of his contract with Target Chip Ganassi Racing Champ Car team.

Reigning Champ Car champion Montoya is a former test driver for Williams after joining the team originally in 1997. Montoya will climb back into a Formula One car when Williams start testing in December.

Button has been released to Benetton in a two-year loan deal and BMW-Williams team boss Frank Williams will use the period to gauge Montoya's potential in Formula One racing.
