Russell was Mercedes’ most consistent driver all year, scoring big points whenever it was possible and coping way better than Hamilton with the lack of consistency of the W15. Drove brilliantly to finish first in Spa and Austin and didn’t deserve to lose the win in Belgium to a minor technical infringement.
Russell became the first driver to have the measure of Hamilton in qualifying on identical cars – no mean feat – and was extremely solid the whole season. However, when his team mate got everything right, Russell didn’t have an answer to his blistering speed. Naïve in the way he crashed out in Australia to avoid Alonso, did a good job but has yet to earn his spurs as Mercedes’ number one driver.
