Former F1 driver Tora Takagi has been named the 2003 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year following his strong performance with Mo Nunn Racing at The Brickyard. Takagi finished fifth in the race, the best of the drivers who have never raced at Indianapolis before. For most of the race he battled with his chief rival for the rookie award Daniel Wheldon, who ended his race with a heavy crash in the closing stages while under pressure from Indy Racing League champion Sam Hornish Jr.
