"It is imperative that we protect the integrity of our sport,'' said NASCAR president Mike Helton. "This type of behaviour cannot be tolerated and is in no way indicative of the manner in which our drivers, teams, tracks and sponsors inter-act with the media.''

All that now remains is to see whether the FIA will take any action against Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo for punching a photographer in Italy and thus risking being accused of bringing the sport into some disrepute.
