Rain hampers day one of Silverstone test

With the Canadian GP coming up in two weeks, many of the teams were back testing Tuesday at Silverstone.

WITH the Canadian GP coming up in two weeks, many of the teams were back testing Tuesday at Silverstone. Thirteen drivers from nine teams were behind the wheel at the British circuit Tuesday in both wet and dry conditions, as the rain fell periodically throughout the day.

Giancarlo Fisichella set the pace on Tuesday, just days after scoring Jordan-Honda's third and fourth points of the year in Monaco, and putting the team sixth in the constructors championship. The Italian was a second faster than the rest of the field, led by Jaguar test driver, Andre Lotterer. Eddie Irvine was also in action for Jaguar Tuesday, managing 63 laps during the session. James Courtney will take over for Lotterer Wednesday, and Pedro De la Rosa will replace Eddie Irvine in the afternoon. Renault's Fernando Alonso will test for Jaguar on Thursday.

Ferrari took the opportunity to test at Silverstone before the series visits the circuit for the British GP on July 7. Luca Badoer completed 78 laps on the day, while setting the third fastest time.

McLaren worked with Kimi Raikkonen and Alexander Wurz Tuesday, Sauber tested with Felipe Massa, and BAR-Honda, still the only team without points in 2002, had test driver Anthony Davidson behind the wheel.

Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya were in action for Williams-BMW, and Jarno Trulli for Renault.

Toyota tested with test drivers Ryan Briscoe and Stephane Sarrazin, who had a rather large crash in the afternoon, resulting in considerable damage to the car.

Testing continues at Silverstone on Wednesday.
