Patrick Long wanted to be racing in Formula 3 this year but he did not have the budget to move to the British F3 series and so took the decision to become a Porsche factory driver in the Carrera Cup series, driving for the UPS-sponsored Porsche Junior Team. He scored his first win last weekend at the Norisring, leading the race from lights to flag. Long's best result prior to that was third in Monte Carlo.

The 21-year-old Californian driver hopes that he will now be able to battle for wins at all the races and challenge for the championship which would be a major achievement for a rookie. He has finished in the top 10 in five consecutive races and is currently fifth in the series. There is now a lengthy gap before the next German Porsche Carrera Cup event in mid-August but Long will compete in selected events in the Porsche Michelin Supercup, which supports the F1 races.
