Former Ford Europe boss Martin Leach is to join the Ferrari-Maserati Group with rumours suggesting that he will be put in charge of Maserati. The appointment is necessary because Luca di Montezemolo is moving to take on the role of the head of Confindustria, the Italian employers' organisation. It is expected that Montzemolo will continue to run Ferrari although some of the job could go to someone else, possibly Antonello Perricone, currently head of Maserati.

Leach is currently in the middle of a $72m lawsuit against Ford because he was unable to take up the job of running Fiat Auto, Ferrari's bigger sister company. Leach has confirmed that he has a new job but is no giving details.

The appointment is good news for the sport as Leach is a big Formula 1 fan.
