Kubica back on track

Robert Kubica will run a test of a HWA-Mercedes DTM car at Valencia next week, alongside the team's regular drivers - which includes McLaren test driver Gary Paffett. It will be the first track test for the former F1 race-winner since his horrific rally crash two years ago which injured his right arm and hand.

It will be the first track test for the former F1 race-winner since his horrific rally crash two years ago which injured his right arm and hand.

It has been a long road to recovery for the talented Polish driver, who's competitive outings so far have been limited to a number of rally races in 2012.

The HWA team is part-owned by Williams F1 CEO Toto Wolff, who has taken an interest in Kubica's recovery. If the test goes well, there is a good chance that Kubica will compete in the German DTM series this season, combining the programme with a number of rallies in the European Rally Championship.

Previously Kubica has said, "What I need to do now is to compete as often as possible, as this is the best way to continue my recovery. My goal is to be competing as often as possible, in whatever category I can find a seat and improve the mobility of my right arm. If, in the end, I‘ll be fit enough to return to Formula One, we‘ll have a go; if not, I‘ll continue racing in other categories."
