Monza circuit officials have announced that the person injured in the mayhem at the la Roggia chicane during the Italian Grand Prix was a fire marshal.

The marshal was injured when debris was scattered across the track as Pedro de la Rosa's Arrows flew through the air joining David Coulthard, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Jarno Trulli and Rubens Barrichello in the gravel trap.

The official was given a heart massage at the side of the track and was then taken to the circuit medical centre. From there he was transferred to a Monza hospital where he is in a critical condition with head and chest injuries.
