WORK began Wednesday at the Hockenheimring on the $50m renovations planned to reduce the length of the track and increase spectator capacity. The new track will be reduced in length from 4.2 miles to 2.7 miles by leaving the old circuit before the first chicane and rejoining it before the stadium section. The spectator capacity will be increased by nearly 40,000 to 120,000 with the construction of new grandstands. The new circuit layout and grandstands will be completed in time for the 2002 German Grand Prix on July 28.
