JOHNNY HERBERT failed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500, having to fly off to race an Audi sports car before being able to get up to speed at the Speedway. The start of the final qualifying was delayed by rain and Herbert simply ran out of time.

The final qualifying runs for the 500, which happens on Sunday a few hours after the Monaco GP, resulted in Michael Andretti, Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy all qualifying albeit at the back of the grid but also resulted in CART driver Oriol Servia failing to make the cut.

Former Williams test driver Bruno Junqueira will start the race from pole position. The field includes four former F1 drivers (Raul Boesel, Eddie Cheever, Max Papis and Andretti).
