Gene tops times in Magny-Cours test

BMW-WILLIAMS test-driver Marc Gene topped the times in the first day of testing at the Magny-Cours circuit on Tuesday.

BMW-WILLIAMS test-driver Marc Gene topped the times in the first day of testing at the Magny-Cours circuit on Tuesday.

Spaniard Gene continued the team's impressive development, after drivers Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya had produced great displays at last weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix. Gene was driving last year's car.

Sauber driver Kimi Raikkonen was second fastest, just two days after competing at Interlagos, as he tested the Swiss team's 2001 challenger on the wet French circuit.

Arrows test-driver Johnny Herbert was third in the times as his day was cut short in the afternoon after he spun into a gravel trap. There was no damage to the car or driver.

Herbert tested electronics on last year's A21 car in the morning and then switched to the team's current A22 challenger in the afternoon.

Prost driver Gaston Mazzacane made up the field at the track and was the slowest driver on the track in the team's AP04 car.
