Frentzen dropped by Jordan
HEINZ-HARALD FRENTZEN was fired by the Jordan-Honda team today only two days prior to the start of practice for his home race, the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
The decision comes after a major row between him and team principal Eddie Jordan after Frentzen trailed home a disappointing seventh in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Although both parties have been debarred by the lawyers from officially commenting on the matter, it is known that Jordan have become frustrated by Frentzen's dwindling form over the past few races and, in particular, his crashes at both Monaco and in practice at Montreal.
Frentzen will not race at Hockenheim and his place for the balance of the season will be taken by Ricardo Zonta, the Jordan team's test driver. Eddie Jordan will now be free to make arrangements for 2002 for a long-term replacement. A source close to the team commented; "We're here to win and this is what we're all about."
"It has been a disappointing season for both of us," explained Eddie Jordan. "We had an exchange of views following the British Grand Prix and this is the outcome."
A statement from Heinz-Harald Frentzen said; "Following an unexpected termination of my contract by Jordan Grand Prix Limited, I will likely not be driving in Hockenheim this weekend.
"The reasons I have been given for this termination I contest in their entirety. My position in this matter is now under legal advice. Due to the current situation, I am unable to make any further comment whatsoever at this time."
Frentzen won the 1999 French and Italian Grands Prix, helping Jordan to third place in the Constructors' Championship.
