THERE are whispers in the Formula 1 paddock that Stewart Grand Prix is looking for a new technical director because of the problems which have been encountered with the team's innovative new gearbox. The team's current technical boss is AlanÊJenkins and while there do not seem to be problems with the chassis the teething trouble with the gearbox are his responsibility. Jenkins has been with Stewart since he left Arrows at the end of 1995 but the team's results have not matched expectations and there is considerable pressure from Ford to find a replacement.

We have heard stories linking both Steve Nichols of McLaren and Tyrrell's Mike Gascoyne to the job. Gascoyne is also being linked to other teams as he is not thought likely to find a suitable position within the BAR F1 team hierarchy.
