Denso has a long history as a sponsor of Toyota racing activities which is not surprising given that the company was originally part of Toyota, becoming independent in 1949 under the name Nippondenso. The company changed its name to Denso in 1996. The company was a regular sponsor of Toyota sportscars at Le Mans in the 1980s and 1990s and was a major backer of the AAR Eagle-Toyota CART team. In recent years the company has supported Toyota Team Sard in the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship and backed Walker Racing in CART and then Mo Nunn in IRL.
