SAN MARINO GRAND PRIX runner-up David Coulthard revealed on Sunday that he had an operation the evening before the race to remove an abscess from his left ear.

Coulthard underwent minor surgery for the problem, which was thought to have been caused by an incorrectly-fitted communications earpiece, which caused vibrations within the ear.

Coulthard was operated on by ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Gaetano Libra, and Dr. Tiziano Lenzi also helped to perform the surgery.

The Scot returned to the clinic on Sunday morning as a gesture of thanks.
