BRITON David Coulthard topped the times on the second day of testing at the Circuit de Catalunya on Monday as he stepped up his preparations for the 2001 season.

The McLaren driver posted a quickest lap time of one minute and 20.386 seconds as he completed 75 laps of the Spanish circuit.

McLaren test driver Alexander Wurz ran three-tenths-of-a-second slower than Coulthard while Arrows driver Pedro de la Rosa was over half-a-second down.

Spaniard De la Rosa continued testing work on the Leafield-based team's new Asiatech (AMT) engines and also performed further work on Bridgestone's 2001-spec tires.

Jordan driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen completed the running with the fourth quickest time - almost one second down on Coulthard - as he ran just 19 laps.

Sunday's opening day of the test was marred by the horrific crash of Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer, who ended up in hospital after his car lost a wheel and flipped over a tire barrier.

The double world champions are expected to have Michael Schumacher behind the wheel when they return to action on Tuesday.
