Former Toyota F1 test driver Ryan Briscoe emerged largely unscathed from a monumental accident last weekend at the Chicagoland Speedway after a wheel-over-wheel incident with the Red Bull Team Cheever car of Alex Barron. The Target Chip Ganassi car flew into the air and hit the retaining wall on the outside of the track, while flying. This tore the rear end off the car and caused a flash fire but the debris fencing stopped the car from flying out of the speedway and the engine and chassis came down to earth on the track with Briscoe amazingly escaping with concussion, two broken collarbones and a bruised lung and bruises to his feet and legs.
Briscoe was taken to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois, for tests after the crash and has now been transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he will remain for a while under observation. The 23-year-old Sydney driver has shown well on occasion this year in his first year with the Ganassi team and hopes to stay with the operation next year.
