Belgian GP secures spot in F1 until 2031

The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps will remain part of Formula 1’s calendar until 2031, but under a rotational agreement. The iconic race will feature in 2026, 2027, 2029, and 2031, skipping the seasons of 2028 and 2030.

Previously facing contract uncertainty, Spa’s new deal provides stability, supported by financial backing from the Walloon government. This extended agreement allows organizers to invest in infrastructure and avoid last-minute renewals. However, the compromise also enables Formula 1 to accommodate new venues while adhering to its 24-race limit.

Spa, a driver and fan favorite, has hosted the Belgian Grand Prix almost annually since 1985. Known for its legendary corners like Eau Rouge and Raidillon, the track is a jewel of motorsport and a vital part of F1’s history, dating back to the championship’s inaugural season in 1950.

The decision reflects Formula 1’s strategy to balance its European roots with global expansion, particularly into Asia. Spa’s rotational model might signal a shift for other historic circuits, as competition for calendar slots intensifies.

The announcement leaves the futures of Barcelona and Imola uncertain, with both facing expiring contracts. Zandvoort, another European venue, has already confirmed its departure after 2026, slightly easing pressure on available slots.

This compromise safeguards Spa’s legacy while allowing Formula 1 to explore new markets. The rotational format may prove a template for balancing tradition with innovation, ensuring that the calendar remains diverse and globally appealing.
