Baby Schumacher in the limelight
MICHAEL SCHUMACHER'S younger brother Ralf yesterday won the most important race on the Formula 3 calendar - the Macau Grand Prix, which is held on the streets of the tiny Portuguese enclave on the south China coast near Hong Kong.
The Macau race dates back to 1970 but has been run to F3 regulations since 1983 when Ayrton Senna won. F1 stars Michael Schumacher scored a win in 1990 and David Coulthard followed suit in 1991 while other F1 men MauricioÊGugelmin, Martin Donnelly and David Brabham have also figured on the Macau list of winners.
Schumacher Jr took pole position this year and was helped to victory when 14 of his rivals were caught up in a big crash which caused the race to be stopped. The accident occurred when Sauber F1 test driver Norberto Fontana hit the barriers at the tight San Francisco Corner. He was then hit - and rolled - by German Sascha Maasen and the other cars piled into the wreckage. No-one was hurt and Schumacher won the restarted race from Italian rising star Jarno Trulli and Spaniard PedroÊDeÊLaÊ
Ralf - who was beaten to the German F3 title this year by Fontana - has been hanging around F1 paddocks in recent weeks - he was in Adelaide - and is thought to be trying to find an F1 test drive for 1996, although he is expected to compete in F3000.
