Jean Alesi has confirmed rumours he was caught speeding this week at 60kph above the legal limit on a road in Germany.

Der Trierische Volksfreund, a German daily, reported that police had stopped a former F1 driver in excess of 140kph en route to the Nurburgring.

The police did not disclose the identity of the driver, saying only that his grand prix career spanned the years of 1989 and 2001.

The only driver fitting that bill is Frenchman Alesi, the now 51-year-old former Ferrari driver.

Alesi duly confirmed to the Swiss newspaper Blick: "I had been in my Mercedes for a few hours already and wanted to get from Avignon to the Nurburgring as soon as possible, as my son Giuliano was testing a Formula Renault for next season.

"The police were very nice and we talked about racing. But they still took more than 1000 euros from me!" Alesi smiled.

"I will probably also lose my licence for German roads for two months."
