San Marino GP 1992
San Marino GP, 1992
Nigel Mansell's four consecutive wins at the start of the season had left his challengers with little hope in the World Championship and in qualifying for the San Marino GP he was again on pole position ahead of his Williams-Renault team mate Riccardo Patrese. McLaren was making progress with the MP4/7 though Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger were still over a second a lap slower than Mansell. The Benettons were on the third row with Michael Schumacher ahead of Martin Brundle while the two Ferraris shared row four: Jean Alesi beating Ivan Capelli. The top 10 was completed by Michele Alboreto's Footwork-Mugen and Thierry Boutsen in the Ligier-Renault. Team Lotus debuted the new Lotus 107 but gearbox troubles meant that it only just scraped onto the grid in the hands of Johnny Herbert. At the start Mansell jumped into the lead and went off to win his fifth consecutive victory. Patrese followed him from flag to flag while the only real interest in the race was supplied by Alesi who did not pit and so got ahead of the two McLarens. Capelli spun out and Schumacher also made a mistake and went off. Later in the race Berger and Alesi collided and both went out leaving Senna a lonely third ahead of Brundle, Alboreto and Martini.
