Gastone Mazzacane

After a career in karting in Argentina in his late teens, Mazzacane switched to cars in 1992, driving a Nissan in the South American Touring Car Championship. He moved into Formula 3 the following year and finished second in the South American series with five victories and as a result decided to move to Europe where he competed in the Italian Formula 2000 series with RC Motorsport. He won the title at his first attempt but then had a disappointing season in Italian Formula 3 in 1995 with BVM Racing and in 1996 decided to jump straight into Formula 3000 with Team Autosport. He had two mediocre seasons with the operation before joining Astromega in 1998 as team mate to Gonzalo Rodriguez. He scored two sixth places and in 1999 decided not to continue in the series and became the Minardi test driver. He was promoted to the racing team in 2000 as Telefonica wanted a South American driver in one of the team's two cars but he failed to make much of an impression and was not retained at the end of the year. For 2001 he found support from PSN and signed to drive for Prost Grand Prix but he was clearly out of his depth and was dropped after only a handful of races. He has since raced on and off in Champ Cars in the United States.
