Sebastian Vettel (1:37.718) and Mark Webber (1:38.475) set the quickest headline times in the second session of free practice at Austin, but McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who was fourth quickest overall (1:38.748), set the fastest time on heavy fuel, suggesting that McLaren's race pace could well be much closer to Red Bull.

Fernando Alonso (1:38.483) was just a hundredth of a second down on Webber's best low fuel time and the Spaniard must be hoping that he can qualify better than his fifth and sixth places in India and Abu Dhabi if he is to keep the Red Bulls in sight on Sunday afternoon.

Hamilton and McLaren team mate Jenson Button (1:38.766) set the fourth and fifth quickest FP2 laps, ahead of Felipe Massa (1:39.029) with the second Ferrari.

Nico Rosberg (1:39.448) put the first Mercedes seventh quickest, ahead of an impressive effort from Bruno Senna (1:39.531) in the Williams.

Kamui Kobayashi (1:39.653) and Michael Schumacher (1:40.115) completed the top 10.
