Saturday morning practice may not be hugely significant in Formula 1 these days, but it is always good for a team's morale to set the fastest time of a session and so there were smiling faces down at Red Bull Racing on Saturday in Istanbul as Mark Webber went quickest with a best lap of 1m27.030s. He was shadowed by Fernando Alonso's Renault and the second Red Bull of David Coulthard. It was a Renault 1-2-3. Nico Rosberg was fourth quickest in his Williams and then came Felipe Massa's Ferrari, Jarno Trulli's Toyota and Lewis Hamilton's McLaren.

From the fastest to the 16th fastest was just one second and so a hesitation could cost four of five places.

Eighth fastest was Timo Glock ahead of Jenson Button, Nelson Piquet and Kimi Raikkonen. In 12th position was Heikki Kovalainen chased by Sebastian Vettel, Rubens Barrichello and Sebastien Bourdais.

Putting things into perspective were the two BMW Saubers of Robert Kubica in 16th and birthday boy Nick Heidfeld in 19th.

Kazuki Nakajima was 17th with the two Force Indias of Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil 20th.
