Felipe Massa set the pace in Turkey on Friday morning with a fastest lap in the first practice session which was a tenth faster than Heiki Kovalainen's McLaren. Lewis Hamilton was third fastest ahead of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.

As usual the times have little real relevance as the session was marked by drivers doing different preparation work for the race.

Sixth quickest was Kazuki Nakajima ahead of Nick Heidfeld, Rubens Barrichello, Nelson Piquet and Timo Glock. Kimi Raikkonen did only a few laps, leaving Massa to do the legwork, saving his tyres for more important sessions.

For the record, Jarno Trulli was 11th ahead of Robert Kubica with Nico Rosberg 13th and Adrian Sutil 14th ahead of Force India team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella. The two Red Bulls were 16th and 17th with Mark Webber ahead of David Coulthard, while Scuderia Toro Rosso became the new tail-end Charlies now that Super Aguri is no longer there to protect them.
