Mark Webber (1:54.589) set the fastest time of the opening practice session in Singapore as drivers had to contend with a wet but drying track, their first experience of the bumpy street venue in anything other than dry conditions.

All quick times were set at the end of the session as a drier line emerged on a track that was still slippery. Just over a tenth behind Webber it was Michael Schumacher (1:54.708) who set the second quickest lap, ahead of Adrian Sutil's Force India (1:54.832). Sebastian Vettel (1:55.137) was fourth fastest with the second Red Bull, from Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso (1:55.160).

Jenson Button, always impressive in slippery conditions, set the pace early on but finished up sixth (1:55.323) from Tonio Liuzzi (1:55.510) and Sebastian Buemi (1:55.523) with the second Force India and Toro Rosso respectively.

The Renaults of Robert Kubica (1:55.672) and Vitaly Petrov (1:55.914) were ninth and 10th.

A number of the potential front runners did not set representative opening session times with Fernando Alonso 11th, Nico Rosberg 14th, Lewis Hamilton 18th and Felipe Massa 19th. Nick Heidfeld, on his F1 return to Sauber, finished the session in 13th place, just over a tenth behind team mate Kamui Kobayashi.
