Nico Rosberg set the fastest time of the Friday afternoon session in Monaco - and then disappeared off up an escape road while trying to go even faster. Fortunately the German did not hit anything. He ended the session two-tenths of a second ahead of his old mate and sparring partner Lewis Hamilton, who a tenth quicker than Rubens Barrichello's Brawn. Jenson Button was right with his Brazilian team-mate. Felipe Massa was fifth.

Sebastian Vettel was sixth overall ahead of the second McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen, Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari and the second Williams of Kazuki Nakajima. The top 10 was completed by Nelson Piquet, who outran team-mate Fernando Alonso. Mark Webber was 12th with Adrian Sutil 13th, despite a set-to with Massa, while Jarno Trulli was 14th ahead of Sebastien Buemi, Sebastien Bourdais, Nick Heidfeld, Timo Glock, Giancarlo Fisichella and Robert Kubica. The Pole had a miserable time, with a massive engine blow-up early in the session.
