Rubens Barrichello and Felipe Massa topped the timesheets at the end of the first practice in Monaco, the pair beating the McLarens of Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton. Kazuki Nakajima and Nico Rosberg were sixth and seventh with World Championship leader Jenson Button eighth, ahead of Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Sebastien Buemi. Behind the Toro Rosso were the Renault of Nelson Piquet, Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull (which came to a smoky stop in the course of the session), Sebastien Bourdais, Giancarlo Fisichella and the BMWs of Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld. The list was completed by the Force India of Adrian Sutil. The two Toyotas were bringing up the rear with Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli not bothering to go for times. It remains to be seen whether Vettel's troubles will result in a grid penalty.
