Practice 2 Report - Davidson spins and wins

Honda F1 test driver Anthony Davidson set the pace in the second practice session with an impressive last minute lap of 1m35.041s, which put him three-tenths of a second faster than Alexander Wurz's Williams. Also in the hunt were Fernando Alonso (Renault) and Felipe Massa (Ferrari). It had been an interesting afternoon for Davidson as the session began with a spin which left him walking home. More antics were to follow with Tonio Liuzzi spinning his Toro Rosso into the pitlane and Juan Pablo Montoya having his car stop just outside the pit assistance area. The mechanics were not allowed to touch the car and so Monty took a rear jack, lifted the car and pulled it back into the area where help is allowed. Cars can be reversed in the pitlane if they are now under power. Montoya would later rejoin the action and have a spin. Throughout the session the times were gradually coming down with Raikkonen, Wurz and Alonso at the sharp end of the action. Massa was pushing hard too but had an off although he was able to rejoin. In the closing laps everyone finally came out of the garages, the Williams boys doing just 11 laps between them in the race cars. The BMWs too were taking it very easy with Jacques Villeneuve and Nick Heidfeld completing 16 laps. David Coulthard too was not wasting energy with a total of eight laps in the Red Bull.

In the final moments there were various runs with the order ending up with Davidson ahead of Wurz, Alonso, Massa and Raikkonen. The top 10 was completed by Giancarlo Fisichella, Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button, Villeneuve and Rubens Barrichello.

Further back were Jarno Trulli, Heidfeld, Robert Kubica (BMW), Montoya, Liuzzi, David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher.

But the times mean little at this point because many of the teams were running with revs turned down to make sure that the engines survive the stresses and strains of the Malaysian heat.
