Jarno Trulli finished second in his Toyota, 24 seconds behind Alonso - the Italian securing the first podium finish for the Japanese carmaker.

Third place went to the Williams-BMW of Nick Heidfeld some 32 seconds behind the winner, in his second career podium finish.

Fourth place went to Juan Pablo Montoya in his McLaren-Mercedes, fifth place went to Ralf Schumacher in the second Toyota, and David Coulthard finished in sixth place in his Red Bull.

World Champion Michael Schumacher struggled to finish in seventh place, while the final points position went to Christian Klien in the second Red Bull.
