Practice 2 Report - Lewis in Hondaland

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time of the second practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix at Mount Fuji. The McLaren star, who leads the World Championship, was two-tenths of a second faster than his team-mate and title rival Fernando Alonso. The pair were half a second up on the Ferrari of Felipe Massa, overturning the order established in the morning when the Ferraris seemed to be dominant.

Toyota is clearly looking to make a good impression in qualifying and so it was no real surprise to see Jarno Trulli fourth fastest, a fraction ahead of the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen. This pair were only just ahead of the Renaults of Heikki Kovalainen and Giancarlo Fisichella, while Ralf Schumacher was ninth in the second Toyota, a rather better showing than we have seen of late from the German.

Robert Kubica, used to regularly being in the top six, had to make do with the 10th best time in his BMW Sauber although he was still well clear of his struggling team-mate Nick Heidfeld, who was a disappointing 15th.

Eleventh went to Mark Webber in his Red Bull-Renault while 12th and 13th were Alexander Wurz and Nico Rosberg in the two Williams-Toyotas.

Fourteenth was Jenson Button in the best of the Hondas but Rubens Barrichello had a more difficult time, damaging his care over the kerbs. He was 17th.

Adrian Sutil continued to impress in the new Spyker in 16th place.

Scuderia Toro Rosso were 18th and 19th with Tonio Liuzzi just ahead of his team-mate Sebastian Vettel.

It was bad news for Japanese fans with Sakon Yamamoto and Takuma Sato at the back.
