The first practice sesson for the Italian Grand Prix was disrupted by a rain storm of tropical proportions which left the teams fighting to stop the pits from flooding as the drains overflowed. In the end the session was red-flagged, although no cars had ventured out on the track for some minutes. The times were of little importance but Adrian Sutil headed the timesheets, ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella. The times were largely dependent on the moment at which the lap was recorded. There were a number of off track moments but no-one did any serious damage to their cars.
