Race Notes - Hamilton wins for Mercedes in Hungary

Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix today from pole position in his Mercedes GP, 10.9 seconds over Kimi Raikkonen in the Lotus-Renault in second, and 12.4 seconds ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull-Renault in third place.

The win is Hamilton's fourth win at the Hungarian GP equaling the record of Michael Schumacher. Hamilton now has 22 career wins. Mercedes GP has taken it's third victory of the season.

Mark Webber (18.0s) in the second Red Bull finished in fourth, followed by Fernando Alonso (31.4s) in the Ferrari in fifth, Romain Grosjean (32.2s) in the Lotus in sixth, Jenson Button (53.8s) in the McLaren-Mercedes in seventh, Felipe Massa (56.4s) in the second Ferrari was eighth, Sergio Perez in the McLaren was ninth and Pastor Maldonado (1 lap) in the Williams-Renault finished in the final points paying position (the first point for Williams this season).

Going into the summer break Vettel (172 points) extends his lead in the Drivers' Championship over Raikkonen (136) moving up to second place, Alonso (133), Hamilton (122), Webber (105) and Rosberg (84). Red Bull-Renault (277 points) also continues to lead the Constructors' Championship over Mercedes (206), Ferrari (194), Lotus-Renault (185), Force India-Mercedes (59) and McLaren-Mercedes (57 points).

The tyre choice for today is the medium and soft Pirelli compound tyres - the soft proving to run 1.5 seconds per lap quicker - most expecting a two or three stop strategy. The top eight runners starting on softs.

A hot day, with temperatures expected to reach 50 degrees Celsius.

At the start Hamilton takes the lead from pole, Grosjean pressured Vettel for second, but can't get the position. At turn 2 Alonso tries pass Grosjean on the outside, but runs out of room and has to back off.

Rosberg and Massa touch and Rosberg runs wide and the two Ferraris get through. Massa suffers some front wing damage.

At the first lap, Hamilton leads Vettel by 1.1 seconds, followed by Grosjean, Alonso, Massa, Raikkonen, Webber, Button, Daniel Ricciardo and Perez.

On lap 4 Grosjean sets fast lap at 1m27.5 seconds.

Webber, the first runner on medium compound tyres, runs in seventh.

On lap 6 Grosjean closes to 0.7 seconds behind Vettel in second place.

On lap 8 Jean-Eric Vergne and Guido van der Garde pit.

On lap 10 Hamilton pits from the lead, switching to medium tyres, he rejoins in ninth place behind Button. Maldonado and Paul di Resta also pit for medium tyres.

At lap 10 Vettel leads Grosjean by 0.7 seconds, followed by Alonso (6.5s), Massa (10.7s), Raikkonen (11.3s), Webber (13.9s), Button (19.9s), Hamilton (20.3s), Perez (27.2s) and Ricciardo (29.8s) in tenth place. Rosberg runs in 12th.

On lap 11, Ricciardo, Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas all pit for medium tyres.

On lap 12 Vettel pits from the lead for medium tyres, rejoining in seventh behind Button. Massa and Nico Hulkenberg both pit. Grosjean takes over the lead.

On lap 13 Alonso pits - a fast stop at 2.6 seconds - and switches to medium tyres.

On lap 14 Grosjean and Raikkonen both pit for medium tyres - speculation that they are running a two-stop strategy. Grosjean rejoins in fifth. Webber, yet to pit, takes over the lead.

On lap 15 Red Bull warns Vettel that he is running too close to Button, who he is unable to get past, and his temperatures are getting too high.

On lap 18 Button is running 1m29s and is frustrating Vettel behind. Grosjean and Alonso closing on the Red Bull.

There are concerns about Vettel's KERS and he has suffered front wing damage.

On lap 19 Grosjean is all over Vettel, looking for a way past.

On lap 20 Sutil pits and retires with a hydraulic problem.

At lap 20 Webber leads Hamilton by 4.3 seconds, followed by Button (12.6s), Vettel (14.1s), Grosjean (14.6s), Alonso (15.4s), Perez (24.2s), Raikkonen (28.1s), Massa (30.5s) and Esteban Gutierrez (33.8s) in tenth place.

Raikkonen sets fast lap at 1m27.4s.

On lap 22 Jules Bianchi pits and switches to soft tyres. His team mate Max Chilton pits the next lap.

Webber, Button, Perez and Gutierrez are still yet to make their first pit stops.

On lap 24 Webber pits from the lead and takes on another set of medium tyres, rejoining behind Alonso in sixth. Perez and Gutierrez make their first stop as well.

Vettel lunges down the inside of Button and takes second place. Grosjean attacks Button, and after getting by cuts the chicane. Alonso passes Button as well. Button makes his first stop, and switches to soft tyres.

On lap 26 Grosjean makes his second stop - the team possible concerned if there was contact with Button. Perez sets fastest lap, then the next lap Button betters it with a 1m26.9s.

On lap 28 Di Resta pits and take another set of medium tyres.

Button and Grosjean are under investigate for their earlier contact.

On lap 28 Grosjean sets fast lap at 1m26.6s. Maldonado makes his second stop. Gutierrez pits as well, and retires with a drivetrain failure. Rosberg pits the next lap.

Grosjean makes a strong pass on Massa to take sixth place.

At lap 30 Hamilton leads Vettel by 11.9 seconds, followed by Alonso (17.3s), Webber (18.9s), Raikkonen (23.1s), Massa (36.4s), Button (36.9s), Hulkenberg (54.9s) and Perez (54.3s) in tenth place.

Button passes Massa for seventh.

On lap 31 Hamilton pits from the lead and stays on medium tyres. He rejoins in fourth place behind Webber. Massa pits as well.

On lap 32 Button sets fast lap at 1m26.5s.

On lap 34 Hamilton passes Webber for third place, and now chases Alonso for second. Bottas makes his second stop.

On lap 35 Vettel pits from the lead and Alonso pits from second place, both staying on medium tyres. Vettel rejoins in sixth behind Button again. Hamilton sets fastest lap at 1m26.1s.

On lap 36 Hulkenberg pits. Vettel is once again being slowed up by Button ahead of him. Alonso behind, closes to six seconds of Vettel.

On lap 38 Grosjean pits to serve a drive-through penalty for the earlier incident with Massa. Button pits for his second stop, switching to medium tyres. Vettel sets fast lap at 1m26.1s. Perez pits. Hulkenberg pits to serve a penalty for speeding in the pits. Ricciardo pits as well.

On lap 39 Hamilton sets fast lap at 1m26.0s, and again the next lap with a 1m25.9s.

At lap 40 Hamilton leads Webber by 2.4 seconds, followed by Raikkonen (7.5s), Vettel (15.7s), Alonso (25.7s), Grosjean (26.3s), Button (41.7s), Massa (45.7s), Rosberg (48.0s) and Maldonado (63.0s) in tenth place.

On lap 41 Hamilton sets another fast lap at 1m25.7s. Grosjean is pressuring Alonso for fifth place.

On lap 43 Raikkonen pits for his second stop from third staying on medium tyres. Webber in second place is the only driver to not make a second stop yet.

On lap 44 Webber pits taking on medium tyres - as he has not run on soft tyres yet, he will need to stop again.

On lap 45 Bottas pulls to the side of the track on the main straight with a mechanical failure.

On lap 48 Grosjean pits from fifth place for more medium tyres, and rejoins in eighth.

Webber sets fast lap at 1m25.1s.

On lap 49 Alonso pits from fourth and takes another set of medium tyres. Massa, Rosberg and Di Resta pit as well.

On lap 50 leader Hamilton makes his final stop for medium tyres and rejoins just behind Webber in third. Two turns later Hamilton lunges down the inside and takes second place, Webber running wide on the exit of the turn.

At lap 51 Vettel leads Hamilton by 7.1 seconds, followed by Webber (9.1s), Raikkonen (16.7s), Alonso (33.4s), Grosjean (35.2s), Button (38.0s), Massa (55.8s), Rosberg (57.4s) and Perez (66.2s) in tenth place.

On lap 52 Vergne and Maldonado both pit.

On lap 56 Vettel pits from the lead for his final stop for another set of medium tyres, and rejoins in fourth place behind Raikkonen. Rosberg sets fastest lap at 1m25.0s.

Hamilton retakes the lead over Webber, who needs to pit once more.

On lap 58 Vettel sets fast lap at 1m24.5s.

On lap 60 Webber makes his final stop from second place switching to a set of soft tyres. He rejoins behind Vettel in fourth place.

At lap 61 Hamilton leads Raikkonen by 11.0 seconds, followed by Vettel (11.9s), Webber (22.7s), Alonso (29.4s), Grosjean (29.8s), Button (39.0s), Massa (48.8s), Rosberg (50.0s) and Perez (69.3s) in tenth place.

On lap 61 Webber sets fast lap at 1m24.0s. Vettel continues to chase Raikkonen, pushing hard.

On lap 65 Vergne passes Di Resta for 14th place.

On lap 66 Rosberg pulls off the track with an engine failure - his team mate continues to lead.

On lap 68 Vettel makes a run on the outside of Raikkonen at turn 4, but runs out of room and continues behind the Finn. Di Resta pits again.

Raikkonen and Vettel continue to battle to the finish, while Hamilton takes to chequered flag to win his first race for the Mercedes GP team.
