Fernando Alonso set the fastest time of the second session at the Hungarian Grand Prix but the times were such that it is hard to figure out if there is anything to concluded from the action. Alonso's best time was three-tenths of a second faster than Heikki Kovalainen's best lap in his Renault, a much higher position than one normally sees from a Renault. Lewis Hamilton was third fastest in his McLaren but ended the session spinning off when he got into a tangle behind the very slow Spyker of Sakon Yamamoto. Lewis ended up stuck in the gravel.

Fourth fastest was Nico Rosberg is his Williams-Toyota, ahead of Nick Heidfeld's BMW Sauber and the two Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa. The top 10 was completed by the Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella, Jarno Trulli's Toyota and the BMW of Robert Kubica.

Whether one can read anything into any of this remains to be seen.

Behind Kubica was the Toyota of Ralf Schumacher, Alexander Wurz's Williams, the two Red Bulls of Mark Webber and David Coulthard. Anthony Davidson's Super Aguri was next ahead of the Honda of Jenson Button, the Super Aguri of Takuma Sato and the second factory Honda car of Rubens Barrichello. The two Tori Rossi of Tonio Liuzzi and Sebastian Vettel and at the back, as usual, were the two Spykers with Adrian Sutil a long way clear of Yamamoto.
