Toyota gave everyone a surprise in the second practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix with test driver Ricardo Zonta a tenth of a second faster than McLaren's Alexander Wurz. There was then a gap of seven-tenths back the fastest of the regular runners, none other than Kimi Raikkonen in his McLaren. Next up were Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher in their Toyotas and then came Juan Pablo Montoya in his McLaren. Rubens Barrichello was seventh in his Ferrari although he ended the session with spin which only narrowly missed the barriers.

Also in trouble was Michael Schumacher who failed to set a time in his Ferrari which broke down on its first lap out of the pits, leaving Michael to sit out the session. Giancarlo Fisichella also ended his session off the track but was still able to set the 11th best time, behind Fernando Alonso. Jenson Button and Christian Klien. The best Williams was only 12th with Nick Heidfeld ahead of David Coulthard (Red Bull), Tonio Liuzzi (Red Bull), Mark Webber (Williams), Jacques Villeneuve (who had a spin), Takuma Sato, Felipe Massa and Robert Doornbos, the faster of the two Minardi drivers and clear of both the Jordans as well.
