Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time of the second practice session for the German GP, lapping the Hockenheim track in 1m15.025s, a time that was seven-tenths clear of the best recorded in the session by Felipe Massa. The Brazilian's best was matched by Kimi Raikkonen, so the top three reflected the top three places in the World Championship. Heikki Kovalainen was fourth in the session ahead of Mark Webber (Red Bull) and Fernando Alonso (Renault), with Nico Rosberg (Williams). The top 10 was completed by the BMWs of Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld and David Coulthard's Red Bull.

Sebastian Vettel was the star of the morning session but ended up only 11th in the afternoon, although he was still ahead of Jarno Trulli (Toyota), Jenson Button (Honda), Rubens Barrichello (Honda) and Nelson Piquet (Renault). Timo Glock was 16th ahead of Kazuki Nakajima's Williams, the Toro Rosso of Sebastien Bourdais with the list completed by the Force Indias of Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella.

There were no major incidents in the session although Glock had a frightening moment when he car went off and rode high after hitting a bump.
